Commands

Type and press Enter to talk. Ordinary speech carries 64 tiles; past that you need a command. Commands start with /, and . does the same thing.

Talking

CommandWhat it does
/say <message> Say something out loud. Also /s — and plain text with no command does the same. Only players within 64 tiles hear it.
/emote <action> Act rather than speak: "/me wants a cookie" prints "* Billy wants a cookie". Also /e and /me. Same range as talking.
/tell <name> <message> A private message to one player anywhere in the world. Also /t.
/fellowship <message> Talk to your whole fellowship regardless of distance. Also /f.
/g <message> Talk to your guild.
/ooc <message> Out-of-character shout to everyone online. Once every 30 seconds.
/trade <message> Trade shout to everyone online. Same 30-second limit. Together these two replaced the old /shout.

You and other people

CommandWhat it does
/afk [reason] Marks you away from keyboard; an "AFK" tag appears above your character.
/getafk <name> Checks whether someone is away.
/finger <name> Looks someone up. You see only what they have unlocked.
/lock <level|email|position|stats> Hides one piece of information about you from other players.
/unlock <level|email|position|stats> Shows it again.
/friend <name> <1|0> Adds (1) or removes (0) someone from your friends list.
/ignore <name> <1|0> Adds or removes someone from your ignore list.
/getquests Lists the quests you are carrying and where each one stands.
/pklist Lists every player you have a crime against.

Fellowships and guilds

CommandWhat it does
/fcreate <name> Creates a fellowship. You cannot be in another one already.
/fjoin <name> Joins a fellowship. Everyone has to be in the same neighbourhood.
/fleave Leaves your fellowship.
/gcreate <guildname> <tag> <colour> Founds a guild: a fellowship of exactly five, 10 gold from you and 5 from each of the others. Tag is up to four letters, colour is 1–9. Type the command twice to confirm.
/gjoin <guildname> Puts you on a guild’s pending list.
/ginvite <name> Owners only: accepts someone from the pending list.
/gpromote <name> Owners only: promotes a member to owner. Five owners maximum.
/gkick <name> Owners only: removes a member or a pending applicant. Owners cannot kick owners.
/gleave Leaves your guild. Type it twice to confirm.
/glist <guildname> Lists a guild’s members.
/gpending Lists who is waiting to join yours.
/gtag <tag> Finds the guilds using a tag.
/gmessages Shows up to ten unread guild messages. They expire after 30 days.
/gdlist Lists your guild’s diplomacy settings.
/gdiplomacy <guildname> <0|1|2> Neutral, ally or hostile. Costs 5 silver, and has to be typed twice.

Your first hour

  1. Walk around Hope before you leave it. Several people there are holding your first quests.
  2. Talk to everyone. Some conversations only open up when you are carrying the right thing.
  3. Fight near town first. Anything at or below level 15 stops paying once you match it.
  4. Spend your attribute points. Nothing spends them for you.
  5. Socket your gems. An empty skill does nothing at all.
  6. Rest with R. Stamina at zero halves your attack, damage and armour.

Levels

The cap is 250. Five attribute points a level up to 100, three to 125, none after that.

Kill something above your level and you get the full award or better. Below it, the award drops 2% a level — and past level 50, killing downwards is halved again. Past 75 there is a tax that grows 1% a level. You never lose experience: dying costs coins.

Gems

Skills come from scrolls. Related ones merge into a single entry with up to fifty sockets across five rows.

You get a gem every level and a second every fifth, in one of the five soul colours — the roll favours whichever colour you have least of. Each socket takes one colour, and every gem you place raises the requirement for the next.

Casting a spell locks that skill's sockets for five minutes.

Fighting

Accuracy against armour, then damage between your minimum and maximum, minus their reduction. Five damage colours, five resistances, 10% better against your own colour.

Ranged weapons are full strength up close, about three-quarters at medium range, half at long, nothing past that.

When you die you lose about 5% of one currency — more from level 10 up, capped at 15% of what you carry — and, if you have been killing other players, one random piece of gear.

Quests

Up to six objectives each: kill a number of something, clear a den completely, reach a place, escort someone there, use the right item somewhere, meet a requirement, or beat a clock. Some stay hidden until you trip them. A clock that runs out fails the quest.

Storing gear with an NPC is not free — the fee grows the more you already have stored.

Fellowships and guilds

A fellowship holds ten, and everyone has to be nearby to join. The experience pool grows with the group rather than splitting flat, and covering all five soul colours grows it again.

A guild needs a fellowship of exactly five, none of them already in one, and thirty gold between them — ten from whoever types the command, five from each of the others. All five start as owners, five owners is the maximum, and the top guilds pay their members an experience bonus.

Player killing

Inside a PvP area, anything goes. Outside one, all three have to be true: PvP is switched on, you are both at least level 15, and the target is past the five-minute protection new arrivals get.

Attack someone who did not start it and you are marked for a minute. Kill them and you go on their list for ten hours, where anyone can see it with /pklist — and while you are on a list, every death costs you a piece of gear.

The rules on top of all that are on the rules page.
